Helping you engineer environmentally and technically sustainable ML solutions in production with software engineering.
Associate Professor (Professor Agregat) at UPC-BarcelonaTech since 2024. PhD in Computing. He was a Distinguished Researcher “Beatriz Galindo” Junior (2020-2024), as well as operative project manager (2018-2019) and a Post-Doctoral Fellow of the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (2016-2018) in Fraunhofer IESE (Germany).
Researcher with more than 75 peer-reviewed publications and H-factor 25 (according to Google Scholar). His interests include Empirical Software Engineering, Green AI, AI-based systems, Software Analytics, and Reference Architectures. Principal investigator in research and technology transfer projects about the environmental sustainability of ML software (GAISSA, ML-EnergyLabel), and co-organizer of research networks in Greening AI with Software Engineering (CECAM-Lorenz). National expert in the standard ISO/IEC AWI TR 20226. In EU framework programmes, he acted as Evaluation WP leader in Q-Rapids (H2020, RIA). He has been PC co-chair in several international conferences and workshops: ACM/IEEE ESEM 2024, GREENS@ICSA 2024, ESELAW@CIbSE 2021, PROFES 2019, CESI@ICSE 2018 and QuASD@PROFES 2017-2018. He has also been reviewer of multiple journals (e.g. TSE, IST, JSS, EMSE, ASE, DKE) and PC member of international conferences (e.g. ESEM, ICSME, ECSA, PROFES, CIbSE).
Silverio is the responsible lecturer of the subjects “Machine Learning Systems in Production”, “Advanced Topics in Data Engineering 2” and “Software Engineering project” at M.Sc. and B.Sc. programs in Data Science and Informatics at UPC. Further, he is regularly giving talks on Green AI and MLOps. His most cited work is on “Software engineering for AI-based systems”.

Research
My main current research areas are:
- Environmental sustainability of machine learning, Green AI/software
- Empirical software engineering
- Software engineering for AI/ML-based systems and MLOps
- Big data for addressing quality requirements in rapid software development
- Technical debt and maintainability metrics
- Software architectures: reference architectures, architectural knowledge, service-oriented architectures
- Engineering practices for data science projects
You may find my DBLP and Google Scholar profiles.
Postdoc stay
I did a post-doc with an ERCIM grant.
PhD thesis
My PhD thesis was about Reference Architectures. I designed and conducted empirical studies on:
- Software Reference Architecture related practices (e.g., goals definition, design, review, and use).
- Analysis of the Return-On-Investment (ROI) of adopting a Software Reference Architecture.
The main results were:
- Understading the Context of Software Reference Architectures in the software industry.
- Industrial evidence about the Benefits and Drawbacks of Software Reference Architectures.
- Industrial evidence about the Artifacts of Software Reference Architectures.
- REARM, a (ongoing) Reuse-Based Economic Model for Software Reference Architectures.
- Practical Experiences in Designing and Conducting Empirical Studies in Industry-Academia Collaboration.
- QuPreSS: A Reference Model To Evaluate Predictive Services.
I did my PhD thesis at the Group of Software and Service Engineering (GESSI).
Department of Service and Information System Engineering (ESSI).
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
Education
I graduated in June of 2008 in bachelor of computer science and in September 2010 in computer science engineering by the University of Almeria, Spain (Escuela Superior de Ingeniería, Universidad de Almería). I studied the fourth year in the University of Ghent (Universiteit Gent) with an Erasmus grant (academic year 2008/2009).
I was awarded a “la Caixa” grant, for the academic year 2010/2011 at Technical University of Catalonia. During this period, I studied the Master in Computing (Information Systems’ specialization) at LSI Department in Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain.
From October 2011 to June 2016, I did my PhD in the GESSI research group. My advisors were Xavier Franch and Claudia Ayala.
From October 2016 to December 2019, I did my post-doc in Fraunhofer IESE, awarded with an ERCIM grant the first two years and then as an operative project manager. My scientific coordinator was Andreas Jedlitschka.
Since January 2020 to January 2024, I was a Distinguished Researcher as part of the Beatriz Galindo programme in the inSSIDE research group and ESSI department at UPC-BarcelonaTech.
Since January 2024, I am an Associate Professor (Professor Agregat) in the inSSIDE research group and ESSI department at UPC-BarcelonaTech.
